Wonderfully said! I have only just found this but love it.

Here's one of my favorite pages on the issue, with veteran HSers' advice about "teaching" in the early years: http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/early.htm

To parents who say that their children push them for the schooly stuff, I suspect that there is more to the story if they'd dig a little deeper. Many little ones are eager to please their parents and love the praise and approval they get from masting academics. Others just love the TIME spent with mom or dad and would happily ask for more algebra, Russian lessons or floor scrubbing if it involved a happy, present parent making it seem wonderful. :) Just a thought!

Also, nobody is saying not to help small children learn. It's wonderful to read and explore and talk and all of that together. It's the overstructured, planned, sit-down-and-learn-this stuff that gives many of us the heebie-jeebies. Children in a rich environment (meaning lots of books, nature, art, imagination and interaction) become marvelously brilliant without any of that business all on their own. :)

Sounds to me based on some of what you wrote that you may have tendencies toward adult attention deficit disorder, which I do not consider a disorder at all but a personality type, seen in many very creative people. I have strong tendencies toward this myself. I'm also a list maker, not only because I enjoy it but also because it's a necessity for me to function in day to day life. It certainly doesn't mean you're a Type A person. I'm a perhaps too relaxed Type B.
Go with what works for you and don't be ashamed that you don't conform to your friends' Stepford Wife ideas of how you should behave!

Hi Mother Crone!

I'm part of a new site, Readsake.com, offering free children's books and coloring pages. The purpose of the site is to promote quality time between parents and their children. Parents can make personalized books by replacing the default pictures and character names with ones tailored to their kids. They can also print coloring pages for free - no more buying coloring books! The site allows for user pages which friends and relatives can visit to print their children's pictures and books. All of this for free!

The concept, of free children's books and coloring pages, seems to be especially timely considering the tough economic situation many are in now.

Thanks!
