Another intoduction to a chapter in your book? Great post. It is awesome that you understand your children so well. It is a great gift to them and your readers.

I've been grappling with the dichotomy of "boxed curriculm" and preparing materials myself. I don't see myself as a boxed sort of person and in that I feel like our approach could be more unschoolish, at least at this point. The problem is unschooling doesn't appeal to me. Does that make sense?

Your post shows me a way that creating mateials and "going with the flow" doesn't have to be unschooling.

I love this post. I always have my eyes open to my child's needs, but it had never occured to me to sit down and list strengths/weaknesses and also character issues. I tend to go with the flow a lot and have been wanting to tighten things up - to have a more mindful plan - without the burden of a curriculum. You have shown me the way. Thank you :-) I am so glad we have oldtimers like you around who can share the wisdom of all your homeschooling years with us. Sometimes I feel I've been doing this for ages but six years is nothing compared with ELEVEN! Yay for you!

A personalized curriculum to me is the heart of what homeschooling is all about. You expressed it beautifully.

What a timely post for me. I just spent yesterday afternoon going through a list of "I Can" statements provided to me by the new school district T will attend and freaking out because 1. the list was huge and 2. she's only mastered 65% of last year's list. We're continuting to school lightly over the summer but I refuse to freak out and try and cram in everything "on the list." T really wants to give this performing arts school a try but if we end up coming back to homeschooling again, the information on your blog will prove to be invaluable.
Thanks for all the wonderful thoughts!
